Boom Art turns over skateboards and surfboard to artists to use as a blank canvas.
People have been debating what actually constitutes art for as long as there have been artists. I’d bet there was a couple of cavemen at Lascaux giving each other shit over their use of perspective and telling each other it was derivative. It seems, all too often, is art or is not to art is in the art of the justification.
A blank canvas
When we start talking about what constitutes a canvas. Shit! That mixes things up totally. The right canvas can make or break the piece. It can be both the canvas and the justification. Think of Banksy’s work in Isreal. The boundary wall between Israel and Gaza Strip became the canvas, the art was in not only the mural but the message behind it.
With all this in mind, let’s talk about Boom Art
The guys behind the Boom-Art just love all things surf and skate and have dedicated their gallery to showcase the culture/subculture behind these disciplines. Collaborating with galleries, influencers and brands from around the world, they produce limited edition skate decks and surfboards with art and graphics ranging from vintage designs, classical art, photography and contemporary cartoons.
If you are a Disney fan, be prepared
The scope of their subject matters is eclectic. Think La Jeunesse de Bacchus spanning three boards to 70s pinups to the erotic minimalist illustration of @petitesluxures and kinda everything in between. We will say if you are a Disney fan, be prepared.
Counter to counter-culture
Their choices of what goes on board are at times contradictory to the established view of the particular counter-culture and sometimes very much in keeping. I mean, what business does a classical fresco have on a board, on the other hand, a cartoon of a Disney character orgy seems very much in keeping with the cool-kid punk nature of skateboarding. The diversity shows an understanding of the culture and a definite willingness to poke fun or snub a nose at the whole thing. Which in itself is very in keeping.
Maybe we’re overthinking the whole thing
It might be altogether simpler than that. Surfboards and skateboards are beautifully crafted objects. Even the most loved, used and beat-up board adds a certain something to a space. Why not let that certain something be a little more… eh something.
The boom-art IG feed is pretty active with auctions and releases popping up reasonably regularly and over on their site you can see what is available to cop right there and then. If any of you do decide to drop your hard-earned cash on a deck or board and actually get round to using it, send us a pic. Now that would be skate!
