In a world of well-intentioned sustainable (but plastic) “keep cups” 3sixteen brings us back to earth with their 3rd collaboration with ceramicist Phillip Kim.

If, like us, you are particular about your particular beverage. Then you’re probably particular in what you put it in. Now, in the world of the “old normal”, we would have been quite satisfied with our reusable coffee cups. These plasticy vessels were perfect companion as we jostled to the front of the queue at the local artisanal coffee shop. It would be filled, grabbed and gone on the way to the office. The caffeine as much a necessity as it was a pleasure.

A different world

We live in a different world now. One in which many of us are making our coffee at home, trying our best to make a rough approximation of a decent cup of joe. But with the home office vibe comes the opportunity to up the cup game.

Life’s little pleasures

Even if we don’t have the necessary chemistry degree needed to make a decent cup of coffee, or the Nepalese monastical training to make a pot of tea, we can be discerning about what we put the stuff in. And like with so many of life’s little pleasures, 3sixteen has just the thing to make it that little more pleasurable. In this case, the L’Avventura Mug by PKK.

The perfect balance

This is the 3rd time that 3sixteen has turned to LA-based ceramicist Phillip Kim. For this iteration, they sent Phil some pictures of their new New York flagship store as it was being fitted out. The faded red brick and the hand-troweled cream plaster walls reminded Phill of a hike that he went on four years ago in Utah, where he found some interesting red clay in the wild. Phil then went on to take this inspiration and skillfully crafted a mug that speaks to his skills as a potter and his experience as a barista. With the weight at the bottom, the cups are perfectly balanced as you drink. The clay retains the heat, keeping your beverage warm for longer and the interiors are glazed for an unparalleled mouthfeel.
