Denim brand Edwin goes back to its Japanese roots for their SS20 collection. Each piece is crafted from exclusive fabrics from the world-famous Nihon Menpu and Kaihara denim mills, in Okayama, Japan.

To mark the launch of the new japan line, Edwin turned to the SABUKARU team. They are experts at placing products in context and connecting people to a culture or subculture. Using their hometown of Tokyo as the backdrop, SABUKARU leads us through the collection as they lead us through the city and its inhabitants. The images give us an intrinsic understanding of both the pieces and the place. They tell the story between the tradition of Japanese workmanship and the use of denim in modern city life.

Crispy and Concise

The collection is crisp, concise and perfectly executed. We’d expect nothing less from our friends in Japan. At the forefront is the jersey program. For the first time, we see wardrobe staples finding their way into the Japanese line. A Crew Neck Sweat, Raglan Sleeve Hoodie and a Classic T-Shirt, all produced in Japan using premium heavyweight fabrics.

DENIM Through & Through

Along with the new line up, there are jeans and jackets that exemplify what Edwin is all about. They are DENIM through and through. The jeans and jackets that make up the denim side of the collection are vehicles to show off the variety of of the finest fabrics the country has to offer. And the list is long!

  • 14oz Open Weave Red x White Selvage,
  • 13.5oz Dark Pure Indigo Rainbow Selvage,
  • 14oz Brown Cotton, Rainbow Selvage,
  • 12.5oz Blue Stretch Denim, Green x White Selvage and
  • 12oz Black x Black Stretch Denim, Green x White Selvage.

Type II with a hint of a Type III

These denims are divided between three fits of jeans and one jacket. The pants are loose straight, regular tapered and slim tapered. So, something for everyone in that lineup. The jacket is a paired down Type II with a nod to a Type III. Gone are the pleats. So is the cinch at the back, replaced with Type III style waist adjusters. The two front pockets are raised a little higher which makes room for the addition handwarmer pockets. It’s a little boxy, but it works well with the heavy jersey of the hoodie or sweat.

Will you go washed? Will you go raw?

With both the jeans and jacket, you can go raw, or you can go washed. Before all you die-hard denimheads go running for the hills, hear me out. For better, or for worse. It was Edwin that invented Stone Washing. So it’s fitting that we get this medium washed look running through their Japanese collection.

Stay home folks!

Unlike the last denim drop we covered, you might have a chance to get hold of a few of these pieces. Now, they are in the EDWIN Stores in London, Berlin, Paris, Milan, Tokyo and Osaka. BUT as we are all doing our stay at home thing right now, right?!?!?!. Much better to head over to their website. Peruse and cop at your leisure while enjoying all of the benefits of Social Distancing.
